Frequently asked questions
What is a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM)?
A Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM) is the first step in the mediation process in the UK. It’s a one-to-one conversation with a mediator to help you understand how mediation works, whether it’s suitable for your situation, and how to move forward.
Attending a MIAM is usually a legal requirement before applying to court for certain types of disputes.
Do both people attend the same MIAM?
No. MIAMs are held individually. Each person attends their own meeting to discuss the situation confidentially with the mediator.
Is a MIAM required before going to court?
In most family law cases (e.g. child arrangements, finances), courts require you to attend a MIAM before you can apply. If mediation isn’t suitable, your mediator can provide a signed court form (FM1 or C100).
How long does a MIAM take?
Our MIAM appointments are for 60 minutes. It can be held online at a time that works for you.
